"My brother-in-law and sister-in-law gave me the Drawn Blank book in 1994, and I enjoyed it. I put in the back of my mind the idea of one day having a painting. On Saturday, June 14, 2008 I placed my order for Dad's Restaurant. Why this one? For me it is the element of Americana in it. The midwest town: water tower, silo (I believe), woman and the pick up truck and Dad's Restaurant. I can envision this as an album cover. It is busy with "stuff". The "stuff" of Bob Dylan songs with descriptive detail that he can weave in word but here it is in picture form. I am reminded of John F. Kennedy's pronouncement when bestowing U.S. citizenship on Winston Churchill, that in Europe's darkest hour, Churchill threw the only weapon he had, the English language, to inspire a people. Bob Dylan has used our language like no other to inspire and to pose questions of conscience for us in personal and social contexts. He has painted the great works with words, filled in color and detail with words, and left the indelible mark of an artist after the words fade. Indebted for the experience, you bet.
